Types, quality and the assortment of paint by numbers sets

Upon reading this article, you will learn what colour by numbers sets are; the sizes of the paint by numbers; types of paint by numbers sets on the canvas and their quality.

Paint by numbers sets are designed for different age groups, have different complexity and size. However, regardless of age and preferences regarding a picture genre (landscapes, still lifes, portraits, etc.), everyone will find something new and interesting.

The modern market offers a huge variety of paintings sizes, but the following sizes are most in demand: 10cm*15cm; 20cm*30cm; 30cm*40cm; 40cm*40cm; 40cm * 50cm.

There are also paintings of larger sizes, for example: 50cm*65cm, 40cm*80cm and huge composite paintings, reaching sizes 50cm*200cm and even larger.

All paintings can be divided into 2 large groups: single paintings (1 picture in the set) and module art panels (the set consists of 2 or more paintings, which are combined by 1 plot).

When speaking about single paintings, in most cases their size does not exceed 50 cm in height and 90 cm in length. All larger paintings are either composite, for example, triptych (3 paintings), or are supplied in disassembled form: a canvas and a set of wooden laths from which canvas stretcher is assembled where the canvas is stretched.

The most popular size of a single paint by numbers set for adults is 40cm*50cm. Exactly in this size the greatest variety of storylines is presented, this size is universal and suitable for any interior.

Separately we can mark out very interesting type of paintings “polyptich” which means “numerous”, “consisting of many”. Simply said, this group includes all module art panels: 2 or more paintings that are united by one theme and look as a whole.

Triptychs, i.e. a picture of 3 separate parts, are the most popular among the polyptychs. Also diptychs, quadriptych and 5-6 sectional large paintings are kinds of polyptychs.

Diptychs are paintings consisting of two parts, i.e. a paired pictorial art. Main size is 60*120cm.

Triptychs is the most popular type of polyptychs. They are the work of art consisting of three paintings. The pictures are united by one plot or common idea. The work is divided into three sections that hang together and side by side. The middle painting can be the greatest; two smaller sections of the triptych are at the sides. Components of triptychs can also be equal in size. Mostly available sizes 40*120cm, 50*150cm.

Polyptychs from 4 sections are of size of the 50*200cm and other.

The size of the paint by numbers set determines the target audience for whom they are intended.

Thus, colour by numbers sets of small size (10*15cm, 20*30cm, 30*30cm) will be interesting for young artists from 4 to 12 years, as they relatively easy to color and present fun and interesting stories with the heroes of favorite cartoons, kind animals and other plots of children's topics. Any child can draw such picture alone unassisted or with the help of an adult, and the process of drawing does not take much time and effort.

Paint by numbers sets of a larger size (from 30cm*40cm and ending with large module art panels) are designed for a more adult and sophisticated audience from 12 years, as well as for anyone who wants to plunge into the world of art and the atmosphere of the creative workshop of real artists. Such paint by numbers sets for adults require more time and patience, as divided into smaller segments, the number of colors in the picture varies from 20 to 30 or even more. But the end result will not disappoint you - a great large size picture that will not stop pleasing you any time you look at it!

As for the types of color by numbers sets, there are two large groups: classic paint by numbers and special paint by numbers with unique features.

Classic paint by numbers set represent standard set of paints and brushes for drawing various plots of subjects and sizes.

Special paintings have certain unique features that allow to subdivide them into a separate subvarieties. There are the following options:

1) Fluorescent paintings. These paint by numbers sets contain special fluorescent (phosphoric) paints in addition to standard acrylic paints, which are applied to the finished picture to give it a glowing effect in the dark. All this beauty looks as follows:

2) Paintings-clock. Why not to mix business with pleasure? There is a clock mechanism in a set of such pictures, which is easily mounted in the picture. Thus, you draw a picture, insert a clock mechanism into it and get a beautiful, interesting, original and practical thing!

3) Painting-mandala. The original type of paintings, which has no numbering, although is divided into segments by contours. Thanks to this organization, the artist creates his own unique picture

What is the essence: in the sets of such paintings there is a large number of colors and several options of decoration (what color) of a particular segment. I.e. you at your discretion paint a picture and get the desired result, or follow manufacturer recommended color scheme, which is usually more than 10. This is the look that a picture drawn in different ways may have:

Paint by numbers sets are usually either on cardboard or on art canvas. Most people like coated canvas, and how many world's masterpieces have you seen written on cardboard? ;)

As for the complexity of paintings: the complexity of sets is determined primarily by the number of colors and detail on the canvas. I.e. the smaller segments for coloring, the more complex the canvas is, the more time and efforts are needed for its coloring. But such hard work, no doubt, will be rewarded with a great finished picture of a good and clear resolution, excellent detailing and literalism. Often the manufacturer determines the level of pictures complexity by the number of colors that are included in the set. This is partly true, because the more colors exist, the more diligent and long-term will be the work on drawing. However, from our point of view, the complexity is determined by the size of each segment: there are pictures with such small segments that they need to be painted over with a toothpick, as it is very difficult to color them with a brush.

The grade and quality of paint by numbers sets is determined by 3 main factors:

1) Level and detailing, draughtsmanship at the time of its creation by the manufacturer

The process of a new plot creation underlies the quality of a picture. The better the manufacturer will work out the picture for detailing, correctly divide into segments, carefully select the colors, the more the finished result will correspond to the declared one.

2) Quality of the paints in the set

High-quality paint perfectly falls on the canvas, not shine through; they are dense, bright and rich. Do not lose color for a long time and retain the original appearance of the picture.

3) Number of colors using in coloring

One and the same plot depending on the manufacturer can be drawn in different numbers of colors. The more colors involved in the creation of a picture, the more intense and realistic it will be.

All these three factors directly influence the final result. To make it clear what it is about, look at the 2 finished creations:

On the left there is a creativity set PICASSO Premium; on the right – medium quality set. There are still manufacturers of the lowest price segment, but we will not even consider them for obvious reasons. In creation of a premium class picture 31 color is involved, for the medium class 24 colors is involved. The result of the visual comparison of the two manufacturers speaks for itself. Is it worth overpaying for the quality and grade (quality) of the picture? - The choice is always yours.
